“In a brief overview, the document establishes the historical context of the investigation, including a “long-standing pattern of concern” about Erskine from the General Synod, and asserts the synod has ownership and responsibility of stewardship over the college.”
All of the events at Erskine College during the last week stem from a slender four-page report.
The Report of the Moderator’s Commission on Erskine College and Seminary has been the impetus for an accreditation investigation, a “change in governance” being referred to as a coup, the planned revision of the institution’s bylaws, a lawsuit and a temporary restraining order.
In June, following a meeting of the General Synod of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, a seven-person commission was appointed to investigate “whether the oversight exercised by the Board of Trustees and the Administration of Erskine College and Seminary is in faithful accordance with the standards of the ARP Church and the synod’s previously issued directives.”
On Feb. 19, the commission presented a preliminary report to the school’s board. According to that document, the commission met 14 times during the previous six months and interviewed “at least 80 trustees, administrators, faculty and students.”
In a brief overview, the document establishes the historical context of the investigation, including a “long-standing pattern of concern” about Erskine from the General Synod, and asserts the synod has ownership and responsibility of stewardship over the college.
The report lists 10 primary findings and references other findings to be discussed solely at the special meeting due to their “sensitivity.”
