In conjunction with its campaign to defeat proposed amendments to the Presbyterian Church (USA) constitution, the Presbyterian Renewal Network is seeking a way to be in, but not of, the denomination.
The effort as part of the Campaign to Reclaim Biblical Teaching, which is working to educate voters and encourage the defeat of amendments to the PCUSA constitution dealing with ordination standards, a new PCUSA constitution and adding to the Book of Confessions. The recent call to action seeks to reach beyond rhetoric to reform.
Coining the phrase “second culture” from a presentation by Joe Small, the PCUSA’s recently retired Office of Theology and Worship director, the Reclaim Biblical Teaching campaign is encouraging Presbyterians to consider different questions. Offering a link to an analysis by Jerry Andrews entitled “Thinking and Living Differently,” the Renewal Network is encouraging Presbyterians to answer:
- Do I agree with the analysis? Does it match my experience of life in the PCUSA? How? And, if not, how does it miss a clear understanding of our situation?
- If I agree that we are an uncatechised church, what is it that needs to be taught, and learned?
- If I agree that we are not living what we believe, what practices should we be committing ourselves to? What should we be doing that we are not doing?
