A woman who works for the Presbyterian Church headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky has been charged with making misleading statements to BB&T bank in order to secure a loan.
According to a police report, Brenda Michelle Smithers, a resident of Jeffersonville, Ind., got a loan for $332,964 from BB&T bank by lying about her finances and her position at J & M Express Inc. As a result of her misrepresentations, the report states, BB&T sustained a financial loss of roughly $311,255.
A spokesperson for the Presbyterian Church (USA) said Smithers served as a senior legal assistant in the church’s legal and risk management services department. She has been suspended from her job, pending further information, according to that spokesperson.
