Frankly, I do not regard myself a “born writer.” In fact, for the longest time I rather sympathized with the author who stated, “I love to have written, but hate to write.” I think many of us are in this predicament. Nevertheless, when the invitation came to make regular contributions to The Aquila Report, I felt a strong urge to avail myself of this opportunity. During my nearly fifty years in the ministry I did accumulate a number of nuggets from God’s Word that I sincerely desire to disseminate.

Most of us have now heard about emails discovered at the University of East Anglia pertaining to the research and “science” of global warming. The Wall Street Journal recently had an interesting statement pertaining to Al Gore, the ostensible apostle of global warming: “Poor Al Gore. Global warming completely debunked via the very Internet you invented. Oh, oh, the irony!”[1]

Sexual abuse of a parishioner requires both deception and an abuse of power. The deception must first be of the self and then of the victim and finally the community. Sexual abuse cannot exist without these components. Deception is clearly involved in the pastor’s relationship with the victim but first and foremost, the pastor is self-deceived. Deception of others is inevitably preceded by deception of the self.

David Clohessy and Barbara Blaine

Imagine a school bus driver who says he’s “found God” and is rehired by a school district despite an accident in which his drunkenness injured his young passengers.

Imagine a lifeguard at a municipal pool nearly strangling a child to death, being convicted for assault, then being rehired because he claims God has “healed” him.

No one would argue that these offenders should never be allowed to work anywhere else ever again. Many people favor a “second chance” of some sort for most who commit a crime.

But is there anyone who’d argue that such offenders should be given their old jobs back, driving a bus full of kids or watching a pool full of kids? Surely not.

Exclusive for The Aquila Report - Dr. Bryan Chapell, President of Covenant Seminary and one of the primary drafters of the document, gives three important reasons for signing.

1. Important for the Church: The central concerns of the Manhattan Declaration – Life, Marriage and Liberty – have been treasured and defended by biblically guided churches throughout history and across traditions. Yet, due to fatigue in a prolonged culture war regarding these concerns, and due to differences regarding how concern should be expressed in a pluralistic society, Christians among all traditions have increasingly shied away from addressing these issues. As a consequence, biblical perspectives either have been marginalized in the market place of ideas or have been left to those of unmeasured zeal for expression. In a sad irony that cannot be ignored, the church’s defense of innocents, morality and freedom has increasingly been perceived by the general populace without and within the church as mean-spirited, intolerant and tyrannical.
